Large Wahaika
Large Contemporary Wahaika carved from a south Westland pounamu show beautiful shades of green a landscape of color's though out the pounamu. Measures 15 inch/38cm
This carving includes the design concepts from the manaia on the handle and teko teko on the blade to bring your mana back
Wahaika translates to "mouth of the fish", in reference to the notch on one side which is used to catch an opponent's weapon. On the other side just above the handle the concave tip above a carved humanoid figure is the primary striking edge, particularly used against the opponent's temples, face, and ribs. The rest of the spherical edge is sharp like a blade.
The Wahaika was a highly prized weapon as it requires an incredible amount of work to make. They were often passed on from one generation to the next. Warriors who carried a greenstone mere were considered to possess great strength and honour.
